Default Species of the Raider Nation

Which one are you? I am a cross between "The Lifer" and "The Inheritor"... I became a Raiders fan when I was 6 (when I was old enough to watch and somewhat understand football).. But, at that age I did not know them as the "Oakland Raiders" and that I had family up there. I only knew them as the "kick butt guys with the pirate on their helmets"...

I became a lifer around the same age. I remember it like it was yesterday. It took about 3 weeks of exploration for me to be totally hooked.

One Sunday afternoon I'm watching the Dallas Cowboys playing the Giants in the living room with my Sister while my oldest brother is in his bedroom watching some other game shouting at the top of his lungs Ooooh! Crack him! Boom!

In the mean time I see the scores going across the bottom of the screen San Diego 21 Raiders 0... I continue to watch the Boring Cowboys game and 2 minutes later the sores roll again... San Diego 28 Raiders 7... San Diego 28 Raiders 14... San Diego 35 Raiders 21 ... San Diego 35 Raiders 28... Well you get the picture... The Raiders won the game.

My Brother comes storming into the living room and immediately starts talking trash about the cowboys being sissys and how could I possibly watch them... I went on about the star on the helmet and such... My Brother interrupted me and said... you just missed on of the Greatest games ever!!! The funny part is my Brother who is a Die Hard Buffalo Bills Fan was talking about The Raiders Game!!!

The next week my Brother invites me to watch the game with him.... (This is a huge deal... My brother invited me into his room to watch TV!!!) The First image I see is Fred Biletnikoff getting dragged down on a baseball diamond and a huge cloud of dust... I remember how cool his arm bands were and how slow he was... The next image was of Kenny Stabler... My Brother pointed out his uniform and said they can't touch him watch this....

It was 3rd and 15 or 20 Stabler drops back and just stands there with his left hand at his side (Ball in hand) and Curt Gowdy says.... "It looks like he's waiting on a bus!" out of no where my brother says... Cliff Branch!!! and sure enough 30 or 40 yards later... 1st down Raiders!!! I was amazed.

The final image was the defense... I asked my Brother who is Dr. Death what does that sign mean who are they talking about? He said Skip Thomas... Next thing big hit ... Curt Gowdy... Oooooh My... Skip Thomas laid a vicious hit. Then Otis Sistrunk Smacked down the QB... I can go on and on about that game but... I was hooked! I saw another sign that said the Snake is loose... I asked who is the Snake? He said that cool hippie with the long hair that throws the ball!

My brother ran down the names of the players and taught me what to look for and the rest is history... And to think My Brother is a Bills Fan!!!

Although I went to an AFL Raiders/Chumps game in 1969(My father drove the bus for the Air force personnel to the game) Being 4 years I don't remember much ,we played them twice in Oakland that year won the first lost the second,I have no idea which game I was at,but it was one of them.

Was not really a crazy fan till 74,and that great "Fish" game, and in 76 the Bicentennial year we almost lost to the Pathetics of all teams, but The Squeeler game was the best game of the year, better than the Super bowl we dominated the Sqeelers although the Sqeelers defense played good, our defense was MF'ing all over their a**.

In 77 we had the Super bowl winner injury Bug and played the longest and greatest game vs the Colts almost a 6 hour game all day long we won,but got robbed by the refs the next week.

Learned some humility in 78-79 we were sub par,but we played some memorable games, the forward fumble game, and since I was living in Louisiana I could not stomach a loss to the "AINTS" they had us down at the half of a Monday Night Game 35-14 Archie Manning was their qb,and we monkeyed his a** in the second half to the tune of 42-35 win.

1980 was one of those years, great games that year were the Sqeeler game in Pittsburgh on Monday Night Bradshaw gave us all he had left, but Plunkett was better it was bombs away all night, the "Save our Raiders" game vs Donkver also on Monday Night(Fans seemed to be pissed we were moving to LA,I think they were right),Playing against Stabler in the Wild Card game it was bad for the Oilers Earl Campbell had like 35 yards rushing, the Divisional game vs the "Brownies" Brian Sipe to Mike Davis, and then Plunkett and Van Eaghan put the game on ice,the Championship game Plunketts first pass over the middle to Raymond Chester who took it all the way to the end zone,we never looked back and Gene Upshaw holding the game ball high in the air when the game was over as we outscored Air-Corriel.

Let me stop here, you can see how sick I was by 1980..lol

Back down memory lane Deadman... I was at that game against the Oilers.. I was 9 years old.. Everyone had "Save our Raiders" banners and they were chanting "Sack the Snake!" I remember it well.... Being 9, I did not know at that time who the Snake was...lol.. And I remember asking my dad "Who is that?" At that time, I had already become a die hard and because I loved them sooooo much, I wanted them to come to L.A. But, I have since grown up and realized they should remain in Oakland.

You can tell back then I only remember the televised games here in Louisiana,no Sunday Ticket back then,it was mostly Monday Night and Playoffs, and a few Sunday games, but I do remember the Game at Donko ville in 1980 we were losing late and then the NBC feed cut out,you could hear the play by play, but all you saw was some stupid NBC logo it was right then when Burgess Owens intercepted a pass and took it in,that was a magical year,I see this Year NBC is doing football again, but they will never be as good as they were back then even with the sh'ty feeds they were better than everybody.

I'm actually neither. Oddly enough, it was a combination of they had badass uniforms, and they were a badass team that would make you pay for the first down you just got that made me a fan. Oh, and the fact that the Donkies, Chefs, and Chargless sucked, and I'd rather be a fan of slow pitch softball than watch them.
