Default Recent Draft History

Rather than paste everyone, I will just provide the link from the team site:
Oakland Raiders

I'm of the belief that we've improved our drafting the last 4 years after several mediocre years and thought it would be easier to talk it out and see what happens.

2006 Draft - A bit early for a full grade, but I think it has A potential.
We immediately gained 2 defensive starters (Huff and Howard) with our first two picks and a starting RG (Boothe) with our 6th round pick. Not too shabby with only 7 picks, but I will go on to say that McQuistan still shows promise, Bing is still a project, even though I'd like to see what he can do for us at safety because we really don't need him at LB, and Morris is OL depth. Solid draft with needs being filled. Huff and Howard have room for growth and can both transition from starters to serious playmakers.

2005 Draft - I will give this draft a B+ for now. Let's see what Walter does before raising it.
We found our MLB (Morrison), our RCB (Washington) and his back-up/nickle-back (Routt), and our starting QB (hopefully) in Walter. Walter's play this year is going to go a long way in determing this draft's final grade. Lots of people thought we got a steal in Hawthorne and Raider nation was kinda jazzed about Riddle (preseason playmaker), but the roster has only so much room. Don't forget that we also traded our 1st rounder to acquire Moss in this draft.

2004 Draft - Grade in jeopardy of falling, but 4 starters and 2 back-ups on the roster three seasons later. Will say B for now.
This draft is turning out to be disappointing. Yes, we got 4 starters out of it, but that might not last and Gallery and Grove have to both show improvement this year for the grade not to drop. Schweigert is beginning to show consistancy and why we drafted him. Hopefully he continues to improve. I was jazzed when we drafted Francis and Morant. Francis was lightning fast and Morant was a big guy with big-play ability. Neither has done much and that's actually an overstatement. Francis is in jeopardy of being cut according to my magic 8-ball. Injuries and inability to contribute. Morant has been stuck behind others on the depth chart. If Moss, Porter, Curry, and Gabriel have any say in it, he will continue to be stuck behind starters. Courtney Anderson was a huge surprise pick in the 7th. Initially he showed great hands for a big guy, but he's turned out to be a poor blocker and average receiver. If he doesn't "wow" the new coaches he will be a roster casualty.

The rest of our drafts can get a full grade. After their 4th season or more the grade just isn't going to change.

2003 Draft - Maybe the grade is still out on this draft regardless of what I said above. Asomugha, Brayton, Williams, and Gabriel give this draft a B- flavor. If Brayton or Williams don't excel this year and you twist my arm, I might say C+.
Asomugha alone is going to prevent this draft from having a bad grade, but when you get 5 first day picks you'd better get some talent. Brayton has been mis-used since he's been here, but is a current starting DE. He needs to show more this year or he will become nothing more than depth. Teyo showed promise early, but ran his mouth which sent him packing. Sam Williams finally got to play a full season last year and if he can stay healthy maybe the team (Al Davis) finally realizes the reward for hanging on to him. Fargas has also shown flashes of brilliance while battling the injury bug. Gabriel is a fan favorite and has shown the ability to be a good #3 receiver.

2002 Draft - Ronald Curry saves this draft from being an D. Grade = C-
Buchanon did get us a decent draft pick in a trade and Napo was a starter for us and helped us get Moss. Walker just got 25 million and was a starter for us last year. I always liked Jolley and think he is a very good pass-catching TE. Curry was a project and has turned into a viable starter. This wasn't a great draft, but it wasn't a disaster either.

2001 Draft - This was the disaster draft. Grade = F
Gibson can't cover, but does get in some great hits. Tui was and always will be a back-up QB, Grant had some skills on my 2003 Madden PS2 game. Cooper ran around with #75 on his back and didn't live up to it. Not a good draft

2000 Draft - At first look you want to say D, but I will say C-
Only 6 picks. For special teams we get an A+ but why did we draft a kicker in the first round? Shaun Alexander was drafted 2 picks later. To be honest, the only players we missed on between Seabass and Porter were Alexander and Bullock. This wasn't a great draft for the NFL as a whole. Lechler has turned into one of the best punters and Porter was worth a 2nd rounder. Even though we only got 6 picks, three are starters. I wanted to give this draft a D, but compare it to other teams in the NFL that year. The Bears, Jets, and Seahawks all get A's from me and everyone else not so good.

Okay, we have traveled back to 2000 and have managed to draft a great defense, plugged in a couple FA (Burgess and Sapp) and signed some walk-ons (Sands 03, Kelly 04) to make it just right. Our special teams is in place after the 2000 draft (LOL), but I am tired and can't keep going on tonight. I do think we've done a great job drafting our defense the last 4 years. Like I said above, the only players we've grabbed from other teams is Burgess and Sapp and if you want to count Robert Thomas whose more of a situational LB. Even on offense, most of the team is OG Raiders minus Moss, Jordan, Crockett, and newly acquired Newberry. Obviosuly, this draft needs to be focused on improving our offense. For those who say we need to quit spending money on FA and build our own team, I think that's what we've been doing and many haven't been paying attention. Moss costs too much to not produce and it sticks out when the team has played so crappy. Burgess and Sapp have combined to produce better than expected. Jordan needs to improve upon what he showed us in 2005.

Please critique my draft rankings and add your own. Even better, pick up the mantle and start rating from 1999 and beyond if you want. For me it's hard to rate the drafts in the 90's because none of those guys are with us any more. I guess it's pretty irrelevant at this point.

I can see that there could be some talent in the last 4 years but nothing that sent the team in a different direction in the win/lose column,as I said in another post the last guy we drafted who set us off winning was Marcus Allen, and even though we had hold-overs from the 70s still, the offensive impact was dramatic and he was the 10th pick, and since then we have had two number 2s and a bunch of other picks under 10 in the first round and most have been wash outs and even when they had talent they could not control their sex drives like D. Russell.

If we draft #1 and do not trade down, we need to hit a home run PERIOD! this player has to be an impact on offense not three years from now,but this year and only one position can do that, its a RB,but my problem ...Is there a GREAT back in this years draft? and I mean great! and if not ,we probably should trade down and let Kiffen find some talent that the scouts may have missed...That worked for Jimmy Johnson when he built the Cowboys that guy must have had a book on every player in college,he had about 3 super drafts in a row right to the Stuperbowl.

It's time we did something!

I can't argue with anything you just said. We've built our defense the last four years and either missed on offense or gotten average at best. Obviously, none of it bringing on-field success.

We certainly do need to hit a home run with this #1 pick and even with our 2nd round pick. It's time to generate some offense and put some points on the board.
