| | I was posting the same news on the "NFL News" forum....
I'd have liked to see them keep Elam. But he was asking for way too much money. The Falcons totally overpaid for him, with $3.3 million guaranteed. And they will need to devote 3 roster spots for kickers 'cause he doesn't do kickoffs.

Blue's got them....

He's one of the few players left from the SB years and it's sad to see him leave for more $$. I'm happy he got another big payday, but can also understand why the Broncos were reluctant to pay that much.

Just like you said that the Raiders overpaid Walker. I'm noticing a trend here....

Perhaps you don't think that's overpaying for a 37-year-old kicker who doesn't do kickoffs and has a history of hamstring injuries. I do.

| | SI.com - NFL - Wilkins retires, Brown brought in - Saturday March 1, 2008 12:41PM Quote:
...signing Seattle Seahawks kicker Josh Brown to a five-year, $14.2 million deal late Friday night.
.....Brown, who spent the last five seasons with Seattle, was seventh in the league in scoring in 2007
.....Denver's Elam is the most highly regarded kicker remaining on the free-agent market.
| Elam, getting around 2 mil a year. Brown, getting almost 3 mil a year.
Case..... closed.....

| | Just as a side note, I rather suspect that Raiders fans would be snickering at the Broncos if the news article was instead a report that the Broncos had just agreed to terms with Elam on the exact same deal (4 years; $9million; 3.3million guaranteed). And you guys would be the ones pointing out that Elam is 37 years old, doesn't kick off, and has a history of hamstring problems.

| | Elam is money. Raiders fans know that after he won the game for the Donks against the Raiders last season.

Yet there were times last season when the team went for it on 4th and long rather than trust him to make a long FG. I dunno... the Pats replaced Vinatieri and went right on without missing a beat.
I'm surprised you guys aren't laughing over the signing of over-the-hill-and-halfway-down-the-other-side former Chefs center Casey Wiegmann...

All that overpaid stuff comes from donk fans who don't understand the salary cap and structure. |

We have some young players (Dumervil, Marshall, Cutler, to mention a few)...players who are and will be contributing a lot more to the team than Walker or Elam... who will need to be signed long-term in the future. I'd like to see the team in position to retain these players even if it means letting a good but injury-prone WR and a clutch but aging kicker go elsewhere in search of bigger paydays.

| | Here's what I know about your kicker. Without elam the mules would have been 4-12. Place kickers don't have the same age factors, we both know that. I also know that keeping him would not be detrimental to signing the younger players. If 2 million is going to break the bank and stop the donkeys from signing their players; there is a serious problem in your front office. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
