Raider News | Jordan Sent Packing ALAMEDA — Running back LaMont Jordan's Raiders career is all but over. That much crystallized Tuesday, when he was informed by coach Lane Kiffin in a pre-minicamp meeting that the Raiders intend to move forward without Jordan. We released LaMont from on-the-field activities," Kiffin said after the morning practice. "We're pursuing some other options with him. Jordan's agent, Alvin Keels, said he has received permission from the Raiders to seek a trade.
We have not had any success at this point in doing so because there are many moving pieces to such a trade," Keels said in an e-mail. "However, with new developments going on around the league, maybe something can be done in the coming days. One of those "developments" Keels alluded to, no doubt, is the Denver Broncos releasing running back Travis Henry on Monday. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has a penchant for bringing in cast-off backs and getting huge production out of them.
Also, the Broncos use a zone-blocking scheme similar to the one Jordan ran behind under offensive coordinator Tom Cable last season, so there wouldn't be a huge adjustment involved with incorporating Jordan into the fold. The most likely scenario involves the Raiders releasing Jordan without compensation within the next few days. Any team interested in Jordan likely would agree to a trade only if Jordan restructured his current contract. Jordan is scheduled to make $4.7 million in base salary in 2008.
The Raiders would get out from under the $4.7 million figure but still have to account for the $1.4 million prorated portion of Jordan's signing bonus if he is released. By waiting until after June 1, the Raiders don't have to account for the $1.4 million prorated portion of Jordan's signing bonus for 2009, as long as he isn't traded. Jordan left the team's training facility before the media arrived. Therefore, he was unavailable for comment. If he isn't traded, he is prepared to do everything is his power to help the Raiders win games next year," Keels said. "If he is traded, I'm sure he will welcome the same challenge with a new team. We will see what happens. Jordan signed with the Raiders in 2005 and wasted little time establishing him as the team's lead back. He rushed for 1,025 yards and caught 70 passes that season. In all, he scored 11 touchdowns.
Injuries and the emergence of Justin Fargas cut into Jordan's playing time the past two seasons. Jordan, 29, rushed for 424 yards in Oakland's first four games last season, second only to Pittsburgh's Willie Parker to that point. However, Jordan injured his back midway through the fourth game and spent most of the 12 final games searching for a way to get back on the field.
Jordan amassed only 125 yards after his fast start. His departure became a likelihood in light of the Raiders re-signing Fargas to a $12 million contract, the arrival of running back Darren McFadden via the NFL draft and second-year player Michael Bush's recovery from a broken leg. Notes: Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was the lone player absent from the first day of Oakland's three-day mandatory minicamp. He is ineligible to practice with the Raiders because he still hasn't signed the one-year tender as the team's exclusive franchise player.
Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly (knee), wide receiver Ronald Curry (foot), center Jake Grove (knee) and safety Jarrod Cooper (knee) did not practice. All are expected back at full health in time for training camp in late July. "... Play of the day: Free safety Michael Huff intercepted a JaMarcus Russell pass that was tipped near the line of scrimmage and returned it for a touchdown. "... Quote of the day: "(He) looks like a cockatoo," is the way Raiders defensive end Derrick Burgess described defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's shorn locks. "... Quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo spent last week in a crash course on the Raiders offense. He was in uniform Tuesday and even took a few reps. He signed with the Raiders last month after a one-year stint with the New York Jets. Before that, he played for the Raiders from 2001-06. "... The Raiders hired Keith Rowen in an unnamed capacity. He coached for the Raiders in 1997-98. He watched practice from the sideline Tuesday.
